With the Single Enforcement Body shelved for the time being, it’s up to umbrella companies to step up.
A recent article stated that the UK Government has reportedly shelved plans to introduce an independent body to oversee workers’ rights in the UK.
On the 13 December, Grant Shapps told the Commons that plans for a Single Enforecement Body (SEB) for labour laws have been put to one side.
Announced in June 2021, the watchdog was intended to combine the work done by the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority, the Employment Agency Standards Inspectorate and HM Revenue & Customs’ national minimum wage enforcement team.
Shapps told the House of Commons business committee: “We’ve spent two years plus of this parliament fighting Covid. It may well be with two years left to go that we’re still able to address some of that. But what we’re more interested in is making sure that the bodies that are already there are operating effectively.”
It is now up to all the compliant umbrella companies to push forward and continue to perform well. We all know that the flexible workforce has much to offer the country and businesses that need skills and expertise on an ad-hoc and fast basis.
With signs the UK economy is heading into a downturn, temporary workers will increase and most of these will be paid through umbrella companies.
We believe that all professionals want to be confident that the umbrella they chose to partner with is compliant in their approach to processing contractor pay.
It is very difficult to operate on an even keel with unscrupulous umbrellas taking advantage of susceptible workers wanting higher take home pay and offering tax avoidance schemes. No compliant umbrella can compete with an uncompliant one.
