ePayMe’s Guide to SDC
Since the Government changed the travel & subsistence expense rules for agency and umbrella workers in the last finance bill, tax relief has been restricted. Workers are still able to get tax relief on his/her travel and subsistence costs if it can be shown that the worker is not under the supervision, direction or control (SDC).
To help you determine what is SDC and if you fall inside or outside, we have put together this handy guide.
ePayMe’s Compliance Health Check
As a leading outsourced payroll provider, ePayMe pride ourselves on compliance, as we know that it is all too easy for recruiters to fall into the trap of just using any umbrella company based on what they say they can offer – which isn’t always compliant.
If you, as a recruitment agency, use a non-compliant company, then you could leave yourselves wide open to financial penalties from the debt transfer legislation, which could be very costly indeed. So why put yourself at risk?
To help you as a recruiter, ePayMe have put together a quick checklist that will aid you in your due diligence when choosing your preferred suppliers (PSL).

‘Right to work’ documents
Every employer has an obligation to ensure that their employees have a legal right to work in the UK, which cannot be confirmed without making the necessary identification and evidence of their status checks. Failure to determine an employee’s right to work could result in penalties of up to £20,000 per illegal worker employed!
For more information, see An employer’s guide’ to acceptable right to work documents on the Gov.UK website.
How does an umbrella company work?
An umbrella company such as ePayMe acts as an employer to contractors, who are working within a fixed term contract, commonly through a recruitment agency. Employees gain employee status with the umbrella company, taking the pressures of payroll paperwork and administration away from the contractor.
