Starting a supply role can be quite daunting and complex when considering your options for having your salary processed.
To take the weight off your shoulders, we have put together our top tips for finding a compliant and trustworthy payroll solution.
Do not believe everything you read – some articles that have been published online regarding holiday pay and the deductions that payroll providers deduct, are not factually correct. A compliant payroll provider will have staff who specialise in this field. They will be able to provide accurate, honest information relevant to your circumstances.
Is the provider on a PSL? – Most agencies will have a PSL in place of providers who have cleared their compliancy checks and hold an accreditation for compliance with the likes of Professional Passport.
80% take home pay – If a provider offers a service that guarantees 80-90% take home pay, this is not compliant and we would strongly advise against taking this route for your payments. These schemes are likely not covered by HMRC. You could run the risk of underpaying tax and receive an underpayment penalty, plus interest.
Customer service –When choosing a provider, consider the Customer Service they offer. Are you going to speak to an automated system? How long do they take to respond to emails? Is the phone number a free or local rate number? What Customer Service feedback do they have? We have to admit, your pay is important and trying to speak to someone should be as stress free as possible.
Is PAYE the best option? When completing temporary assignments, PAYE through your agency is not always the best solution. If you are registered with more than one agency, having multiple companies paying you could have a detrimental impact on your tax code. To avoid this, you can use an outsourced payroll provider who will manage all payments. This will then allow you to work with multiple agencies and have a single pay solution, with no interruptions to your tax code.
Common myth – One of the most common myths we hear is that you have to pay the employment costs. This is not correct. When you have your pay processed through an official payroll company like ourselves, the agency provide an ‘agency rate’ that is uplifted from the PAYE rate. This allows the agency to compensate for these deductions.
