All social workers in England have been asked to renew their registration on an annual basis. Social workers can apply for renewal between 1st September and 30th November each year.
If successful social workers will have their registration renewed from the 1st December.
The Social Work England Register is publicly available online and anybody can search the register to check that a social worker is registered. Anyone using the title of social worker and who is not registered is committing a criminal offence as stated in part 6 of The Social Worker Regulations 2018.
To apply for annual registration renewal, social workers must confirm they have read, understood and will continue to comply with Professional Standards
The renewal process takes between 20-30 minutes and can be completed online or by a paper application form requested by email. The process may take longer if personal information has changed or CPD development is being included.
If you join the register during the annual registration renewal period (1st September and 30th November), either for the first time or as a returning social worker, you will have recently provided us with your information therefore you will not need to complete another form or renewal application.
A £90 renewal fee must be paid when applying for the renewal. If a direct debit is set up, workers can pay the registration fee in 2 instalments of £45 on the 1st October and 1st April each year. The deadline to set up a Direct Debit is 23rd September.
It is important social workers are honest when applying to renew. Before they submit their application, they will be asked to confirm that the information provided is accurate. If false or misleading information is given, your application may be denied for renewal or you could be removed from the register.
If the application is refused and the worker is removed from the register, they may have the right to appeal the decision. However, they are not entitled to appeal for the following reasons:
· did not submit an application
· application was incomplete
· did not pay the relevant fee More information can be found here regarding appeals.
