Some of Britain’s biggest supermarket chains are recruiting thousands of workers to help cover the busy Christmas period. With last year’s Christmas effectively cancelled for many, customers are expected to splash out on big celebrations this year.
Asda has announced plans to recruit 15,000 temporary workers for the festive period, with roles covering checkouts, shop floor and home delivery. Around 500 roles are based in Asda’s depots and 1,500 for home delivery driver positions. Asda has announced that there will be opportunities for some of the seasonal staff to remain into the New Year.
Earlier this month Tesco revealed they are looking to take on 30,000 seasonal workers this Christmas. Half the roles have already been filled by temporary colleagues who joined during the pandemic and had their contract extended until after Christmas. The roles are for both Tesco superstores and Extra branches, picking for online deliveries and in-store replenishment.
Sainsbury’s also announced similar plans this month, looking to hire around 3,000 delivery drivers, 14,500 store roles and 4,500 warehouse.
It seems many of the big supermarkets are following this hiring drive with Morrisons also looking to hire 3,000 new staff to meet the Christmas rush. They will be hiring staff for their distribution centres and manufacturing sites, as well as forklift truck drivers.
There are still concerns over supply shortages but supermarkets are urging people not to panic buy. No one in Britain wants to see another Christmas cancelled due to shortages.
