History of the Christmas Jumper: A (sort of) True Tale
The history of the Christmas jumper dates back to when the first ‘Nan’ came into existent. Her grandchildren came of an age where they could feel the emotions of disappointment and humiliation. She looked out her frosted window upon her flock of sheep and thought “I know exactly what i’m going to do “.
Soon Nan, the first of her name, knitted her first thick, itchy jumpers with bright, eye-sore patterns and presented it to her beloved grandchildren. The children, all excited and such as it was Christmas morn, ripped open the brown paper presents to find these garish materials presenting themselves back.
The grandchildren gave a sideways glance at each other, a look that many grandchildren would exchange for centuries to come. They knew they had to express emotions of joy, otherwise their Nan will shout “You ungrateful sods! That Tiny-Tim down the lane has nothing! Nothing! And you can’t even wear the jumper for one day!”
So the grandchildren let out a wavering emotion of joy and pulled the jumpers over their heads and said in unison “Thanks Nan! We looooooooove them.” Nan, always thinking the best of her grandchildren, couldn’t hear the tones of despair in their voices and thought to herself “That went down like my lamb hotpot!” Which incidentally, was cooking over the fire for their Christmas dinner as her flock of sheep had frozen that winter due to their lack of wool.
The following Christmas, the grandchildren were in for a Christmas treat! “Where are the jumpers I made you last year?” she barked at her grandchildren. “Oh… we out grew them!” the grandchildren lied in unison. Truthfully, one had found itself being ‘needed’ as kindling for the fire, the other fitted perfectly at the end of a dirty mop.
“Not to worry!” cheered Nan, and she handed the grandchildren their presents. The grandchildren ripped open their presents, once again, then Nan exclaimed “I’ve made you some more!”
So every year we force ourselves to wear our jumpers for the sake of Nan, Gran, Granny, Grandma, Grandmother and any other ladies and gentleman that insist and giving us a jumper every Christmas.
This year we’ll wear our jumpers with honour and pride for the children who live in poverty. It could help Save the Children bring essentials like healthcare, education, protection and food to the millions of children around the world who are missing out on the most basic support.
